A breakout is when price moves decisively beyond a support or resistance level, often starting a new directional move.
Breakout from a range
A breakout occurs when price pushes through a level that has been holding it — above resistance or below support — signalling that one side has finally won. Traders watch breakouts because they often mark the start of a fresh trend or an acceleration of the existing one.
The catch is the false breakout, where price pokes through a level only to snap back. Volume confirmation and a clean candle close beyond the level (rather than just a wick) help separate real breakouts from traps.
