A death cross is the bearish mirror of the golden cross: the 50-day SMA crosses below the 200-day SMA, signalling that the medium-term trend has rolled over beneath the long-term trend. It is widely read as confirmation that an asset has shifted into a sustained downtrend.

As a lagging signal it can arrive long after the peak and occasionally fires near a bottom, producing a bounce. It is best used to manage risk with regime and momentum context. Read the full golden cross & death cross guide.
