Liquidation

Liquidation is the forced closing of a leveraged position by the exchange when losses use up the margin backing it.

Also known as: liquidated

When a leveraged trade moves against you far enough that your margin can no longer cover the loss, the exchange closes it for you, usually at a loss of the whole margin plus a fee. The liquidation price depends on the entry price, the leverage and the exchange's maintenance margin.

In a sharp move many positions are liquidated at once, which adds selling pressure and can push the price further, a pattern often called a liquidation cascade. The liquidation calculator estimates where yours would be.
