MACD is a momentum indicator built from two EMAs that flags when short-term momentum shifts relative to the trend.

MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) tracks the gap between a 12-period and 26-period EMA, with a 9-period signal line on top. When the MACD line crosses above its signal line, momentum is turning up (a bullish cross); below, it is turning down (a bearish cross). The histogram shows the distance between them.
Because it reacts within days, MACD catches turns earlier than a moving-average crossover — at the cost of more false signals in choppy markets. Read the full MACD guide.
