Best and worst months for crypto: seasonality by month

How the 20 largest coins have done in each of the twelve calendar months since 2019, from daily closing prices. Choose the coins, compare the months, then open any month for its year-by-year record.

What stands out

  • January has been the strongest month on average (+11%, up in 4 of 8 years) and June the weakest (−12%, up in 0 of 8).
  • For Bitcoin alone the best month has been October (+17%) and the worst June (−4.1%).
  • Treat the top of the table with care: without its best year (2021), January's average falls from +11% to +0.9%.
  • July closed higher in the most years (6 of 8), which is not always the month with the highest average: one huge year can lift an average above a month that is simply more consistent.

Counted from daily closes since 2019. The coins move together, so each year is one observation for a month, not one per coin: about 8 observations at most.

History, not a forecast. A handful of years, dominated by a few big bull and bear runs, cannot establish a seasonal pattern. Use this to see what happened, not to time a purchase.
