A 50-day SMA adds up the last 50 daily closes and divides by 50, then repeats each day as the window moves. Because every day counts the same, an old price drops out as suddenly as a new one enters, which is why the SMA is smooth but slow.

The 50-day and 200-day SMAs are the ones traders watch, and their crossing is the golden cross or death cross. See them on any large coin, such as Bitcoin's moving averages.
