How the calculator works

Starting on the date you choose, it buys your amount of Bitcoin at each scheduled day's closing price, adds up the coins, and values them at the latest close. Monthly purchases land on the same day of the month as the first one. The lump-sum figure puts the same total in on the first day instead.

It is a record of what already happened, not a forecast. A plan that started before a long rise looks good and one that started before a fall looks bad, and neither tells you which comes next.

Questions

What is dollar-cost averaging (DCA)?
Dollar-cost averaging means buying a fixed dollar amount of an asset on a regular schedule, whatever the price. You get more coins when the price is low and fewer when it is high, which spreads your entry price over time instead of staking everything on one day.
Would DCA or a lump sum have done better with Bitcoin?
Over the last 3 years, $100 a week into Bitcoin added up to $15,700 and is worth $19,348 (+23.2%). Putting the same $15,700 in on the first day would be worth $48,716 (+210.3%). A lump sum comes out ahead when the price climbs from the start; spreading purchases comes out ahead when the price falls first.
Does it matter how often I buy BTC?
For Bitcoin over the last 3 years, the return on money put in was: every day +23.1%, every week +23.2%, every month +25.8%. The schedule usually moves the result far less than the start date does.
Does the calculator include fees and taxes?
Fees are zero unless you fill in the fee field. Exchanges usually charge a percentage of each purchase, which reduces the coins you get every time, so enter your exchange's rate for a realistic figure. Taxes are not modelled.
Where do the prices come from?
Daily closing prices of the BTC/USDT pair on Binance, from January 1, 2019. Each purchase is filled at that day's close. A day with no data uses the previous close.
