Bitcoin Halving
The Bitcoin halving is the scheduled cut in half of the reward miners receive for each block, every 210,000 blocks, about every four years.
Also known as: halvening
Halvings reduce the rate at which new bitcoin is created: 50 BTC per block at the start, then 25, 12.5, 6.25 and, since April 2024, 3.125. The next is expected around April 2028. The supply schedule is fixed in the protocol and widely known.
Whether halvings drive price is debated; there have been few of them, and each came in a different market. Our halving study shows Bitcoin's path after the 2020 and 2024 halvings on one chart.
